Planning Your Farm

Here are the five simple steps (we will be pleased to accompany you during this process without charge or obligation if you are in or near San Diego County; call us at 858-207-4831):

  1. What size do you want (and can afford)?
  2. Where do you want to put it?
  3. What is your climate like?
  4. Call us to discuss your options. Would you like to visit an existing farm?
  5. Order.

First, what size Grow Foods aquaponic system would you like to buy that will meet your own specific requirements? Your choice will depend on your goals: do you want to help feed your family, or teach about aquaponics, or feed the needy, or commercially sell the produce?

Second, walk around your property and see where you'd like to put your aquaponic farm or garden. For example, you can put one in your backyard, the side of your house, in a field, pasture or even in your driveway. You can install one in a garage, basement, barn, porch, hoop house, or in a greenhouse. You should also consider whether using solar power makes sense for your installation (we can help with this).

Because we are dealing with live fish, we want to assure that when these 'fingerlings' (baby fish) do arrive, they make an easy transition into your system. So there are preparations necessary to create a safe environment for your fish when they arrive. Whether you plan on raising fish for food (tilapia) or as valuable pets (goldfish and koi), you want to make sure they thrive in your organic environment.

Third, what climatic considerations are there for your geographic location? If you decide to put your system outdoors, and you live in a cold climate, it will require a structure of some kind (such as a greenhouse, hoop house, enclosed porch, or outbuilding) that has adequate insulation, lighting, and a heat source to maintain maximum production year round. Or, if you have a basement, you can put it there.

Fourth, contact Grow Foods so we can go over your plans. Every installation is unique in some way, and we can help you make the decisions and trade-offs. We want you to have many years of enjoyment and satisfaction from your aquaponic system.

If you are in or near San Diego County, you may contact us before you start Step One! We will be happy to have a no-cost no-obligation meeting with you to look at your proposed location, answer your questions about installation and costs, and even take you to visit existing farms. Call us at 858-207-4831 today.
